New Way Air Bearings Provides Opportunity for Hands-On Learning to Local Students

Aston, PA. – On November 1, 2019, students from E.T. Richardson Middle School in Springfield, PA visited New Way Air Bearings for a rare, behind the scenes look at air bearing manufacturing. Participating in ‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?’, students spent a day interviewing employees, filming them at work, and gaining a new and exciting perspective on manufacturing.

‘What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?’ is an annual video competition that started in Pennsylvania with a goal to excite students to explore manufacturing careers and companies. Created in 2013 by the Manufacturers Resource Center in Allentown, teams of students and teachers are paired with a local manufacturing company, given camera equipment, software, and professional guidance as they work collaboratively to script, record, and edit their video stories. The program has met with such success it has been adopted in more than a dozen additional states.

Lydia Kirkpatrick, an eighth-grade student from E.T. Richardson was thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the experience.

“This is a really cool product they make here. I had no idea before I came here how cool it was and how cool manufacturing in general is. I’m very thankful New Way allowed us to come,” Kirkpatrick said.

New Way Air Bearings’ intern from Drexel University, Lauren Lugones, demonstrates to two E.T.Richardson Middle School students how one piece of manufacturing equipment at New Way works to create Porous Media Air Bearings.

This is the third year New Way Air Bearings has participated in the event with local students. Nick Hackett, President of New Way Air Bearings, is thrilled to be hosting the students again this year.

It’s been very encouraging to see the maturity and passion of some of the kids involved in the program. It’s also made us realize that we are doing something ‘cool’ and that we have the opportunity and responsibility to improve awareness in the community,” Hackett said.

The students create video stories showcasing their experiences at the manufacturing companies they visited. These videos then compete to earn various awards by both judges and online voting. Winners will be honored in early 2020 at an awards night which students, teachers, parents, and participating companies attend.
