Vertical Linear Accelerator for Navy Contract Utilizes Air Bearings

Dynamic Structures and Materials selected New Way Air Bearings to provide rectangular air bearings, in support of a Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project. Our air bearings formed the basis for a vertical accelerator, capable of arbitrary waveform capability and a 400-pound payload.

New Way was selected by Dynamic Structures and Materials, LLC for use in a Navy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract focused on building a Vertical Linear Accelerator for use in testing and training of Human Visual-Vestibular Acuity.

The use of New Way Rectangular Air Bearings in the Accelerator supported the following motion requirements:

  • 12ft. Stroke
  • 2Hz freq. Response
  • 1G peak acceleration
  • 182kg (400lb) total payload
  • ± 3mm position error
  • Arbitrary waveform capability
