New Way® Slewing Rings provide a frictionless alternative to rolling element slewing rings. Through the use of our Porous Media Technology™, we generate a micro-thin cushion of air between the inner and outer housings, allowing for nanometer scale precise rotational motion for large scale applications with thin profile requirements.,
Slewing ring bearings are traditionally employed in industries and applications which require a large aperture with a compact profile, while also supporting axial and radial loads. This has traditionally led to the heavy employment of roller bearing based solutions. As with all contact bearings, these necessitate regular maintenance and lubrication to address typical wear issues like spalling and brinelling.
By switching to slewing ring air bearings from New Way, you gain access to a drop in ready replacement product (bolt for bolt), with the following benefits:
Slewing ring bearings built on porous technology float on a micrometer thin cushion of air, providing truly frictionless motion to your application. This opens the door to considering parts lasting on the order of decades. Case in point, several custom slewing ring type air bearings have been in use on the New Way manufacturing floor since the 1980’s.
The lack of any dynamic components in our frictionless slewing rings also removes the inherent inertia of the ball, roller or needle bearing assembly. This in turns produces a system with zero hysteresis error or positioning overshoot, which is invaluable when considering highly precise rotary applications such as observatory positioning.
The unique nature of our porous media products makes porous media slewing rings an inherently cleanroom compatible technology. While air is already cleaned and filtered prior to entering the bearing, the size of the openings in the bearing face acts as a natural sib-micron filter. Internal testing by New Way places all of our bearing products as being ISO Class 3 cleanroom compliant (less than 1,000 x 0.1μm particles / m3), and arguably even meeting the stringent requirements for ISO Class 1.
For the modern manufacturing facility, whether it be pharmaceutical, semiconductors, or aerospace, cleanroom manufacturing is rapidly becoming a best practice, and our slewing rings are up to the task.
Our current line of LID Series slewing ring air bearings has been designed from the ground up to be a bolt on replacement for existing roller bearing solutions, not just retrofit compatible, but a bolt for bolt solution requiring no modifications or adapters.
While traditional rolling element bearings may still be the best choice if you require absolute load capacity above all else, porous media based slewing rings provide meaningful benefits if you are concerned with precision, safety, cleanroom compliance, and other application specific requirements.
Slewing ring air bearings from New Way Air Bearings are ideal for products which require a large aperture, compact profile, smooth motion and high precision. Additionally, all New Way porous media products are ISO Class 1 cleanroom compliant, due to the filterlike nature of the graphite material we use.
Metrological applications require absolute precise motion and radial positioning. Since there are no internal components with their own inertia, radial systems built on New Way technology provide arcsecond level precision.
The manufacturing, grinding, inspection and packaging of optical products requires arcsecond precision in cleanroom environments, and New Way products are not just ISO Cleanroom compatible, but actively filter the environment while they do so.
As the global manufacturing system increasingly moves towards lights out manufacturing, you need systems and motion solutions which can run 24/7. 365 days a year without any degradation in performance. Without contacting components, pouring media slewing rings can operate for decades.
Slewing Ring Air Bearings will be available in a wide array of sizes and configurations, however we are beginning the slewing ring products with the LID Series, which uses a fixed inner diameter and a rotating outer diameter.
